Facebook, Life... There's No Escaping Change
Like it or not, the new layout is mandatory for all business and brand Pages now. As a marketing professional, I love it! Facebook Timeline offers more visual real estate which allows for added branding opportunities & creativity. But I've heard a lot of grumbling from friends and clients since Facebook first introduced the new layout a few weeks ago and I attribute this to the fact that change isn't always easy, even if it's a change for the better... I was reminded of this a few days ago when my "baby" Rain, turned 18. First of all, I'm only "28" so how can my little girl be 18 already? Someone's been doing creative math and sadly, that someone must be me! Second
of all, I started my real estate career when she was a baby- in a terrible market full of short sales and foreclosures... (Well, ironically it seems we've gone full circle in that aspect.) But countless things have changed- for the better.
Take the shift from traditional marketing; the days of negotiating for a premium spot in the paper have been replaced with trying to get the top spot in search engine rankings. And I fully embrace the changes that have enabled me to sneak in some work from the beach on my iPad, use Social Media to connect directly with customers, set up an online store to launch a product or brand, make business transactions solely through e-mail or video conference and post commercials online for free advertising... All great changes.
Research has determined that Facebook Page fan engagement increases 46% with the addition of Timeline, so this change is actually something to be excited about. You just need to make sure you make the transition smoothly, and that you familiarize yourself with what features have been added. As for my own fear of change, it occurred to me that I've actually been watching my daughter transform into this beautiful woman her whole life. She turned out to be loving, intelligent & kind. The type of person who isn't afraid to stand up for the the underdog, or kids that get bullied... I really couldn't have asked for a better daughter. (Besides, I'm in marketing- I can still do some creative math and stay "young"...) Happy Birthday Rain and Happy Facebook Timeline Day to everyone else!
